インターンシッププログラムの受け入れ

京あはせでは、2025年8月4日（月）から8月29日（金）までの期間、京都の大学に留学中のベルギー人学生をインターンとして迎えました。夏季休暇を除く約3週間、私たちとともに業務に取り組みました。

インターン生はオランダ語を母語とし、フランス語・英語にも堪能。さらに日本語能力も非常に高く、主に「日本語からフランス語」および「日本語から英語」への翻訳やチェック作業、そしてそれらに関連する業務を担当してもらいました。

本人からは、翻訳業務の流れや注意すべきポイントを学び、それを実際の業務で活かすことができたことで「非常に有意義な経験になった」との感想が寄せられました。弊社にとっても学生インターンシップを受け入れるのは初めての試みであり、地域社会、そして国際社会への貢献につながる貴重な機会となりました。

最終日には、3週間の体験を振り返るレポートを作成してもらいました。ここではその一部を抜粋してご紹介します。レポートは日本語と英語の二言語で執筆されており、掲載にあたっては個人情報保護や機密保持などの観点から一部編集を加えていますが、基本的には本人の文章をそのまま引用しています。

[インターンシップ：レポート（日本語）]

私はベルギーの大学修士課程１年生です。大学の専攻は日本学で、現在京都の大学に留学中です。

修士課程を卒業するために、最小限13日間のインターンシップをしなければなりません。このインターンシップはベルギーの会社でも、留学中なら日本での会社でもしてもよかったです。「専攻との関係があれば」という唯一の条件がありますので、業界の幅広い可能性がありましたが、自分をチャレンジしたいと思い、日本での翻訳会社でインターンシップがしたいと決心しました。これは、主に自分の日本語能力を尽くしたいと考え、または翻訳業界について興味深く思い将来でもこのような仕事をしてみたいと思っていたからです。

来日し、住居地域の京都市の周囲の翻訳会社を調べ始めました。しばらくして京あはせという翻訳会社のサイトを見つけました。サイトに書いてある項目を読むことにより、京あはせが翻訳の品質に関して細心の注意を払い、また多方面の分野に活躍していると分かりました。翻訳者が多彩な対象グループ向けの様々なテーマについての多種多様な書類をどうやって取り組むかについて学ぶ最適な機会になると信じ、自己応募しました。

私と同じく日本での翻訳会社でインターンシップをした友達が雑務ばかりで翻訳そのものとほぼ関わることがなかったと聞きましたので、最初は何を期待すべきかはよく分かりませんでした。しかし、京あはせのスタッフと社長に大歓迎され、私が会社の翻訳作業に直接携わることになることを明確にしました。例を挙げると、初めて任された課題は京あはせが既に翻訳した産業製品カタログの英語とフランス語のチェックでした。また、社長に営業に興味があるということを伝えたら、すでにインターンシップの二日目に、お客様のところまで訪問することを共にすることさえ許可されました。さらに、ある日本の企業が海外の支所に発表するために利用される日本語文書の英訳にも直接に翻訳の手伝いやチェックを任されました。

インターンシップの二週間目は、主に産業製品カタログの英語とフランス語のチェックを続けました。しかし、新たな翻訳依頼が届き、そのような製品の説明をフランス語に翻訳する機会を与えられました。大学で習得した知識や、一週間目に身に付けた翻訳のスキルを尽くせる最適なチャンスでした。二週間目は特にフリーランスの翻訳者にお仕事を頼む過程や、トラドスのような翻訳の流れを促進する翻訳ツールについても学びました。

最終週間目はまた効果的な一週間でした。産業製品カタログのチェックを終了することができ、または新しく任された取扱説明書の英語への翻訳も上手くできたと思います。まずは翻訳すべき箇所を原稿から表に書き写し、そして別の説明書との用語の一貫性を維持するために、既に翻訳した説明書を照合しながら翻訳しました。

全体的に言えば、京あはせでインターンシップをすることは素晴らしい経験だと思います。スタッフにも社長にも常に優しく説明していただき、喜んで私を働かせていただいたため、職場の雰囲気が非常に居心地良かったと思います。翻訳業界の魅力を丁寧に紹介していただき、インターンシップには京あはせよりいい職場を見つけることができなかったと思います。この期間で覚えた知識を将来にも応用することを心待ちにしています。

[インターンシップ：レポート（英語）]

I am a first-year master student at a university in Belgium. My major is Japanese Studies, and I am currently on an exchange to a university in Kyoto, where I study Media Culture.

In order to graduate from my master program, I am required to complete an internship of at least 13 days. This internship can be done at a company in Belgium, or in Japan during our exchange program. While the range of different internships we are allowed to choose is very wide, as our only requirement is that it needs to be an internship ‘with some connection to our studies’, I chose to challenge myself and do my internship in Japan at a Japanese translation company. The main reasons why I chose to do my internship at a translation company is that I wanted to put my Japanese language skills to a good use, and because I was interested in entering this kind of industry once I graduate from university.

And so, I started to look for local translation companies in the Kyoto region where I live. It did not take me long before I stumbled upon the website of Kyo-Awase. Kyo-Awase is a small and local translation company located in the Yamashina district of Kyoto city. Through reading their website, I could tell that they were serious about the quality of the translations they delivered to their clients, and learned that they were active in different fields, such as works about ikebana and tourist brochures, or manuals for industrial equipment. This would give me the ideal opportunity to gain a better understanding of how translators manage different kinds of texts about various topics, written for different kinds of audiences.

At first, I had some unclear expectations about my internship, as I had heard from friends who also did their internship at a translation company, that all they had to do was some administrative tasks, and were not really involved in the translation itself. However, the employees and representative of Kyo-Awase welcomed me with open arms, and quickly made it clear that I would be actively participating in some of the translation processes of their company. For example, my first task was to check translations of webpage for certain industrial products. Kyo-Awase had already translated these pages into several languages, and I had to verify if the French and English translations were up-to date and correct. Already on the second day, the representative asked me to join her on a visit to one of the company’s clients for sales purposes. Besides that, I was also able to actively help on the translation of a presentation made by a Japanese company, who was going to give said presentation also to its international branches. Especially in the first week of my internship, I learned the basics of what it means to run a translation company, how the translations are managed even in cases where in-house translators do not speak the ordered language and the work is outsourced to external translators, and the importance of correctly translating texts with a clear purpose and audience group in mind.

In the second week of my internship, I mainly continued the verification of the English and French webpage translations. However, I was also offered the opportunity to translate some sections of the website, as the client had recently added new products and requested translation for them. As I was tasked with the French translations, it was a great opportunity for me to put the knowledge I had learned over my academic career, as well as the skills about translating in the previous week to a good use. During this week, I also learned about what kind of procedures are taken when requesting external translators to do work, and about different tools such as Trados that help organize and facilitate the translation process.

The last week of my internship was another productive week as well. I managed to finish checking all the remaining industrial products’ webpage translations, and was also tasked with the English translation for an instruction manual from another client. First, I had to enter the to-be translated parts from the manuscript into a table, and then translate it while referencing other translated pieces Kyo-Awase has done for the same client, in order to maintain a consistent use of language throughout the different works.

Overall, it was an amazing experience to be able to do my internship at Kyo-Awase. The staff and representative of the company were very kind and willing to let me work there as an intern, which created an extremely nice working atmosphere. I learned much about the fascinating industry of translation from them, and I am confident to say that I could not have found a better place to do my internship. I am looking forward to using the knowledge I was able to obtain during this period in my future career.
